Week 8 Results...

This week most of the home bars got the victories, some of them very one-sided.

The Stickmen of Nick's headed to the Oasis to take on the Bulldogs, and ran into a brick wall. The 'Dogs stopped them in their tracks with a 15-6 victory. Henry, Chris, and Jim got 3-wins each for their club, while Leo got all 3 for his Stickmen. Only real bright spot for the Nick's team was a beer frame victory for Scott and Madsack.

At the Oasis main table, the Original O's were hosting the other Nick's team, the 8-Ballers. In a very exciting match it came down to Doug and Joel in the final frame - best 2 out of 3 won the night. Joel got it on the final game for the one-point Oasis victory, 11-10. Slade got a hat trick for the O's, and Pops and Mike won the beer frame for the guests.

The Down Lo crew were down low hosting the Oasis Dragons, but weren't very nice hosts. They blew out the Dragons 17-4. Helping the cause with 3-0 victories for the Down Lo'ers were Charles, Kevin Cibart, Larry, and Jason. Charles and Kevin won the beer frame for the home team. Only bright side on the Dragon's scoresheet was Brennan's 2-1 victory. This win moves the Down Lo team to a 6-point lead in the standings, and still undefeated.

The Hammer Heads of last Call made the longest mileage-based road trip possible, heading all the way across Chico and out to Durham to take on the Empire Club. The Empire thanked them for coming out then turned around and handed them a solid 13-8 loss. The victorious Empire club got hot-shooting from almost everybody, each going 2-1. James and Pat also picked up the beer frame win, sending the Hammer Heads out the door with a receipt in hand.

The only home loss was at the Town Lounge as they hosted the Oasis Nuggets. The home bar lost the night by a substantial 15-6 score. The Nuggets came in and got some great shooting from all the Mike's on their team - Mike Karol got a 3-0 win, as did the father/son duo of Mike Brandt Sr. and Mike Brandt Jr.  The Mike's - Karol and Brandt Sr., hooked up in the beer frame match to also get the victory.

All for this week - good luck in the next.

FYI, all suspended parties suspensions (regarding the Town Lounge/Dragons scuffle) are either up, or they have paid their fines, and are eligible to play this week.

Week 7 results...
Dec 8, 2009, 1:23 am

All right, moving on from all the crap I hope...

Week 7 Results:

Another week of visiting team dominance. All home bars lost this week, and lose did they. These 'guests' came in and did some stompin'! Each host was knocked out by either a 7-14 or 6-15 score. All these lopsided scores shuffled up the standings a little bit - be sure to check where your team now sits.

The 8-Ballers and Down Lo match starts the run down with an odd-looking scoresheet - each 'Baller got 1-win each, which means every Down Lo'er got 2-wins each. Never seen that before. And of course to add to the pattern, the Down Lo'ers went ahead and won the beer frame by - you guessed it - 2 to 1. The Down Lo extended their league lead, and perfect record.

At the same bar, different table, the Nick's Stickmen hosted the crew from Towne Lounge. They didn't fare much better, in fact worse. They gave up 15 points and won only 6. Ironically, they followed the exact same pattern as the other 2 teams in the bar - every Stickman won only 1, and every Towne Lounger won 2, including the beer frame 2-1. Only exception was Kevin's ass-whoopin' on Scott, winning 3-0. The Lounge welcomed back Ed Tice to the league, paying his dues for the year.

The Empire Club of Durham were on the road, the Midway to be exact, as they travelled to the Oasis to take on the Nuggets. The Empire came in and conquered, 14-7. The two teams were tied at the break 6-6, but the Club went on and dominated the last 3 matches 8-1. Pat Sands, Ty, and Mike Dixon had a hat trick each. The Empire couldn't get the beer frame, but I'm sure still left very happy.

The Bulldogs were at least on paper the visiting team as they had an intra-bar match with the Dragons, and won solidly 15-6. Newcomer for the Bulldogs, Henry Kracht, had a 3-0 win in his 2009-2010 debut, as well as Dennis and Jim. Brian and Ed added a beer frame win for the 'Dogs to make the night a complete success for them, defeating Micah and Dragon's recently-added Rob Calderaro. Welcome to the league, guys.

The last match to report on was the Last Call Hammerheads and the Oasis O's. Again, the visiting Oasis team got the big win, 15-6. Stacy, Slade, Brian, and Joel each had 3-0 victories for the Oasis club. Newly acquired Hammerhead Nick Manes made an instant impact for his team in his debut - doing about as good as you can do in one night - he got a 3-0 victory, with an 8-ball Break and Run, and helped Jerry win the beer frame for the Last Call bunch. Definitely would have been a much uglier loss without his contributions.

Only 2 games left in the first half - make 'em count, and keep practicing!

Be sure to check out the forums - starting to hear a lot of chatter regarding a Scotch Doubles format for the beer frame. Voice your opinions (once you're a registered user) on this and anything else on your mind. Please note - keep the forums general and not on a personal level, or they will be deleted.

Good luck in week 8!

...and regarding the incident...
Dec 2, 2009, 8:47 pm

As mentioned in the previous post below, Aaron has stepped down from his position as league president. I have taken his place as acting president, and the first wonderful thing I have to deal with is handling the consequences of a bar fight between the Oasis Dragons and the Towne Lounge.

Without getting into too much detail, a strong argument broke out regarding players being too close to the league table and distracting shooting players, either intentionally or unintentionally. Granted the tight confines of the Oasis back corner doesn't help these situations from arising, there is a proper way to handle the situation and an improper one. The proper way would have been to get the captain(s) invloved, voice your concern with him/them, and let them (the captains) find a peaceful resolution to the problem. That's why these guys are captains. The improper way would be to get in a shouting match, which leads to a pushing match, which leads to a lot more. The improper way happened on Nov. 19th. Luckily it 'only' escalated to a shove here and there, and a scrum reminiscent of a rugby match. In the end, players were separated, some left the bar, and the match concluded. The resulting penalties now bring us to today. Three players were suspended for varying amounts, based on prior history and amount of involvement. Jason Jones of the Towne Lounge was suspended, as well as Brenon Williams and Joby Dawson for the Dragons. Suspension weeks can be decreased if the player wants to pay 'bail' of $25 per week suspended, with monies going to the end-of-year pool league party. Unfortunately, Brenon also ended up losing his expensive cue in the melee, as it was snapped somewhere in the scrum. Another reason not to fight.

Fighting in this league can not, and will not be tolerated. This is at the basic core a recreational, beer drinking, get-out-of-the-house, it's almost the weekend, BS with your friends, non-compensated, un-sponsored bar pool league. Personal property is at risk, as well as bodily injury. We have Dad's and Grand Dads playing with a lot higher priorities. They don't want to come home with a black eye and have to explain. We all, or most of us, are working and can't afford to miss work with a broken hand or a fractured skull. AFLAC doesn't cover that. There are bar reputations involved. These owners don't want a black eye on their businesses. This league has history. It has alumni, living and deceased. We owe it to them to do what they did - have fun.

So consider this a league-wide warning - suspensions for weeks or months is just a start. Further fights between any bars will be handled more severely than in this instance. The rest of this year will be under my watch. There is nothing concrete in the rules this year, but next year it will be included. Until then, any fights will be subject to my judgement or a league-wide captains vote. Either way, there will be tougher penalties here on out.

All parties would like to consider this over and done with, especially me. Let's move on and play like the people this game was built around - gentlemen.

Good luck tomorrow night.

Aaron steps down as President
Dec 1, 2009, 7:16 pm

Aaron Smith, the Chico Mens Pool League President, is stepping down from his position he has held for the past several years. Unfortunately, he will also be stepping aside from playing pool as well. With out getting into too much detail, his main reasons are to step back from the chaos and stress of running the league and focus more on his family. "Most weeks are not bad, actually pretty much self-run, but when altercations arise, especially ones that arise when your own team is involved, it becomes very stressful. It's hard to be the judge, jury, and executioner when friends and teammates are involved", said Aaron. The situation he refers to has to do do with an argument and shoving match that ensued between his Dragons and the Towne Lounge during their match on 11/19/09.

Scott Andrews, from the Nick's Stickmen, formerly 'unofficial' Vice President and statistician/web site manager, will be taking over for Aaron from here on out, until a proper voting can occur at next year's Captains Meeting in October. Unfortunately, his first order of business will be dealing with the fiasco that occured and handing out penalties for those involved. These penalties will be posted right here on the web site's front page on Wednesday. Please check back for more information and details.

Speaking for myself and the entire League, we appreciate all that Aaron has done for us. Many of the things he has done has gone unnoticed and unappreciated, all to help the league run so smooth year after year. If you do see Aaron around, be sure to thank him for all his hard work. He will still be involved in this year's end of the year party, as well as assisting Scott get the league going again next season.

Thanks Aaron!

Week 6!
Nov 20, 2009, 7:56 pm

CAPTAINS:

1) The League website has now been purchased, which means the site is now officially chicomenspoolleague.com. Now that it is official, you can remember it a lot easier and share with your teammates, friends, and family to see stats and accomplishments. Please let your bar owner know about the site so they can check in as well. Be sure to register on the site to get email alerts, and allow access to the forums, and other areas.

2) I added a stat in the stats page for '8-Ball Break Run Outs'. If someone on your team accomplishes this, make a note on the home teams scoresheet so I can add it to their stats. Either put a big star in the win box, or circle it, or just write a note on the front of the sheet. If someone on your team has already accomplished this, let me know so I can edit the stats. Again, this is an 8-ball break and run-out (not just 8 balls in a row halfway through a match), and make sure it's on the home team's scoresheet, the one that's turned in.

Week 6 Results…

The Dragons of Oasis were home to host the Towne Lounge crew, and were leading 7-5 at the break, but faltered in the second half and lost to the Lounge 9-12. Dave Larabee, the Towne Lounge top-shooter, continued his hot streak by picking up a 3-0 win versus Micah. Steve Hale helped the cause with just one win, but it was an impressive 8-ball break and run, leaving Steve Hambeck helpless in his chair. The visiting team also walked away with a beer frame victory thanks to the Jason Jones/Kevin Kinell tandem.

The other Oasis home team this week, the Bulldogs, were hosting the Nick’s 8-Ballers. The ‘Dogs finished the night with a convincing 14-7 victory. Frank and Jim each chipped in 3-0 victories for the Oasis team, while newcomer Ed Bowers and his beer frame partner Chris saved Stacy at least one round of beers. Pops made his 2009-2010 match debut with a 1-game victory.

The third Oasis team, the Original O’s, were off on a trip down the Midway to take on the Empire Club crew. Their result was the same as the Bulldogs – a 14-7 victory. Stacy was the lone 3-game victor on the night. Ty and James helped their team enjoy a round of big-beers on the Oasis as they won the all-important halftime match.

The fourth Oasis team, the Nuggets, were on the road to take on the Nick’s Stickmen. Captain Mike Karol didn’t make the trip due to his wife’s illness. Obviously this was much more important for him than a simple pool league night. We all agree and wish him and his wife the best and a speedy recovery. His team did do well in his absence, winning the match 12-9. The stickmen were down 4-8 at the half, battled back after the break, but fell short by 2. Kenny Duff, essentially the top shooter in the league at this point, had another impressive 3-0 win to help his team. Cele and Scott battled hard in the beer frame and came away with a 2 out of 3 victory versus Kenny Duff and Jimmy Scott. Bill Rohrbach made his 2009-2010 debut with 1 win. The Nuggets all posed for the camera this night, so their pictures are now online.

Again, be sure to submit your own team pictures, or wait for Scott and the Stickmen to visit your team.

Results are in for the Down Lo vs. Last Call match - and it wasn't pretty, at least for the Hammerheads. The Down Lo put the smack down 15-6, and took the beer frame from Rich Jr. and Sr. All matches were 2-1 except for Jerry's - he got a 3-0 victory. As previously stated, with the big win the Down Lo'ers are back in first place.

Obviously no games Thanksgiving night, at least officially. Practice in the down time and come out shootin’ in week#7!

Week 5
Nov 17, 2009, 1:17 pm

Week 5 results…

A lot of one-sided victories last week, with most of the wins by the visiting team again.

The Down Lo players headed over to the Oasis to take on the first-place Nuggets. The Down Lo jumped out to a quick 9-3 lead at the beer frame, and put it in cruise control the rest of the way bringing home a commanding 16-5 victory. Gregg, Jerry, and Kevin all came away with 3-0 victories for the Down Lo, and Charles got an 8-ball Break-and-Run to add to his stats sheet. The Nuggets got a lot of 1's and 0’s on their half of the score sheet, but did wrestle away the beer frame as Mike K and Kenny beat Charles and Jason. It was the Down Lo’s first beer frame loss of the season. With the impressive night, the Down Lo team jumps to first place in the standings, leading the Nuggets now by 2 points.

The Bulldogs were the ‘visitors’ as they took on the Oasis O’s at Chico’s Oldest Beer Joint. This one was tied 9-3 at halftime as well, and the Bulldogs went on and won 14-7. Chris and Jim each got hat-tricks for the ‘Dogs, but Brandon and Slade won the beer frame for Oasis - their first beer frame win of the year. Congratulations to Hersh for finally paying his dues.

The Stickmen of Nick’s headed north to the Last Call, home of the Hammer Heads. The Stickmen were up 8-4 at the half, then ran away with it in the second half for a 15-6 victory. For the Stickmen, Mike Madsack continued his winning ways with his 2nd consecutive 3-0 win, and Jesse got his 3rd straight 3-win match. Cele and Sundy lost the beer frame to Rich Jr. and Jason, but Cele did get an impressive 8-Ball Break-and-Run during his regular match to get something for the new stats column.

One of the two home teams to hold its ground was the 8-Ballers of Nick’s. They defeated the visiting Dragons 13-8, with Jimmy Soto leading the way with a 3-0 win. Brenon and Micah won the beer frame for Oasis, as Pops and Mike left another surprise for Nick’s owner Dave - a beer tab for 16 pool players.

The Empire Club travelled to Chico to take on the Towne Lounge. A very close match unfolded. They were tied 6-6 going to the beer frame, but with Howard getting 2 in the final match, the Lounge squeaked out a home-team win, 11-10. Pat Sands got a 3-0 win for the Durham group, the only 3-0 match for the night. Larry and James teamed up to get the beer frame win for the Empire Club.

Good luck in week 6!

-Scott-

Week 4...
Nov 11, 2009, 9:24 pm

Just some housekeeping, mainly just for Mike Clarke and his Oasis team – I never received Hersh Aseeja’s payment as promised on our league night, 10/29. He has played one match, and one beer frame (but zero wins, zero beer frames). I also noticed as I looked closely at the Oasis score sheets, there are two Brandon’s on his team – Riley and Olson. I have Brandon Riley paid, but nothing for Brandon Olson (who has only 2 beer frame losses). Unless something has been worked out with Aaron, or payment left with Stacy, these guys need to get paid to have them eligible to play anymore this year. As we all agreed and have upheld to, ‘you don’t pay, you don’t play.’

Week 4 Results…

Speaking of the Oasis club, they travelled downtown to take on the Down Lo squad. The underground team handed the O’s a 13-8 loss, with Charles ending the night with a 3-0 victory. Chucky and Jason also cleaned out the beer frame, to keep the Down Lo’s beer frame record a perfect 4-0. If you check the stats page, you’ll see that Charles has been a part in all of them. Slade represented his team well with a 3-0 victory of his own.

Over at Nick’s Nightclub, there was a battle between their two in-house teams – the 8-Ballers and the recently transplanted Stickmen. The former Quackers club won their home opener 12-9, thanks mainly to Jesse Uribe and Mike Madsack’s perfect 3-0 frames. Lots of 2’s and 0’s for the ‘Ballers, but no 3-game winners this night. Nick’s owner Dave was screwed either way in the beer frame, but Scott and Sundy made it official for the Stickmen.

The Hammer Heads of Last Call hosted the Town Lounge team this week, and stunned them with an 11-10 victory. Helping the cause for the 'Heads was Phil and Rich Jr. each getting 3 wins, Howie came through for the Lounge with 3 in the final frame to make it a close match. Steve Hale and Dave Larabee did come out with the beer frame for the Towne Lounge.

The Oasis had its own intra-bar matchup, this time between the Dragons and the Nuggets. Things didn't go the Dragon's way, as they fell to the Nuggets 7-14. Travis was the team leader for the Dragons, mustering out 2 wins. On the flipside, everyone on the Nuggets had 2 wins, except Moses with 1, and Jimmy Scott with 3 victories. Jimmy and Lee Taylor made it even worse by winning the beer frame. The victory keeps the Nuggets in first place, by a good 9 points over the Down Lo.

The final matchup of the week was between the Oasis Bulldogs and the Empire Club of Durham. The Empire collapsed, with a final score of 6-15. The Bulldogs won it by the 5th match, thanks mainly to Keith, Chris, and Dennis picking up all 3 frames. Not much to say for the Empire's side of the scoresheet, except for a big 'W' in the beer frame thanks to Pat and James.

As always – good luck in week 5!

-Scott-

Stats!
Nov 6, 2009, 9:33 pm

The stats section is complete. The results are all in there, and I added some other stats, but I can't quite get another column in there to show percentage of wins to matches played, so I made a seperate page for the Top Shooters (left-hand column). In the stats section, you can always sort stats by clicking on the top of the column you want to sort. You can choose to see everybody in the league, your team, or any other team you want to check out by selecting it from the pulldown menu above. Clicking on hide/show legend will show what the abbreviations are.

Just got pictures submitted from the Down Lo team - they are now up. If you have pictures of your teammates, or any pool-legue related photos to put in the photo gallery, send them to me! Either scoresheets@sbcglobal.net or djsda@msn.com.
